It was around this time that Augustus Bilstein’s son Hans returned to Germany to assume control of company operations after completing his education in the United States.

First Forays Into Automotive Technology

Hans was the driving force behind the company’s new nickel and chromium plating processes, and it was he who began to transform the company into the powerhouse of automotive engineering it would become. Beginning in 1927, Hans Bilstein partnered with the Berlin-based lifting gear manufacturer Levator-Hebezeuge-Fabrik to manufacture various car accessories. Within a year, Bilstein was supplying the chrome-plated bumpers that would grace the front and rear end of the first generation of German mass-produced cars. The following year they would go on to manufacture of portable car jacks that could be kept in the car and used by the roadside in the event that a tire blew while out on the roadway. This would prove to be just the start for Bilstein however.

Mid-20th Century Innovations

1954 marks the year that Bilstein came into its own with the development of their innovative suspension system and vibration self-dampening shocks. The company poured its development capital, time, and resources into developing their technology and the production infrastructure necessary to mass produce it. Their first monotube gas pressure shock absorber system was installed in a Mercedes-Benz production car, an innovation still considered a landmark automotive engineering event that made cars safer and more comfortable to drive.
